Third Annual Atkin Conference – The New Generation in the Middle East

Third Annual Atkin Conference – The New Generation in the Middle East
2nd December 2011 ICSR Team
In Atkin Fellowship Conferences

On Friday 21st October, ICSR hosted the Third Annual Atkin Conference at King’s College London. Over 200 participants attended the event, entitled The New Generation in the Middle East, including leading policymakers, academics and experts on the Middle East.
The conference took place in a year of unprecedented transformations in the Middle East. The revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya are changing the region’s political map. Even Israel has witnessed a wave of popular protests.
The aim of this year’s conference was to try and make sense of what has happened in the Middle East in 2011, and to see what will be next. Issues looked at included what role would diasporas play in the ongoing struggles for peace and democracy and assessing how influential traditional media has been and how new media has been effecting change? Activists told us what it felt like to be on the ground? While key policymakers and journalists predicted how the New Middle East will change in 2012 – and beyond?
ICSR brought together many of the key movers of the Arab revolutions, as well as analysts and grassroots activists from across the Middle East, for a day long conversation about The New Generation in the Middle East. It was the first time that this group of activists – from Arab countries and Israel –came together to discuss the future of their region.
