About President Kumaratunga:
H.E. Chandrika Kumaratunga served as Prime Minister and, then, President of Sri Lanka from 1994-2005. During her Presidency, she took on the challenge of the prolonged ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. Her government entered into two ceasefire agreements with the rebels and worked towards building integration and understanding between all Sri Lankan communities, making a public apology for injustices experienced by minorities and setting up a Truth Commission. She survived an assassination attempt by separatist extremists, having previously lost both her father and her husband in assassinations. Her mother was the world’s first woman Prime Minister. President Kumaratunga is a member of the Club de Madrid, the association of former Presidents and Prime Ministers.
