Major-General Yisrael Tal, who died on September 8 aged 86, was an Israeli soldier who designed what many considered to be the world’s finest battle tank; when first introduced in 1979, the Merkava’s unique shape made it one of the safest vehicles on the battlefield, its 105mm gun one of the most lethal.
