Her government entered into two ceasefire agreements with the rebels and worked towards building integration and understanding between all Sri Lankan communities, making a public apology for injustices experienced by minorities and setting up a Truth Commission. She survived an assassination attempt by separatist extremists, having previously lost both her father and her husband in assassinations. Her mother was the world’s first woman Prime Minister.
