Cairo brokered a ceasefire deal this morning bringing an end to Israeli airstrikes on Gaza and the rockets being launched from there into Israel. The ‘mini conflict’ has cost 30 Palestinians their lives and has inflicted injuries on Israelis too. The jury is still out on whether or not this ceasefire will hold. Is Egypt’s newly formed government setting a pattern as a future regional mediator? But what does it mean to the new Egyptian leadership? Does this mean that it has more credibility amongst its Palestinian neighbours? Or was an agreement reached merely because Hamas is not interested in escalating the conflict?
